Grand Naniloa Hotel Hilo (a DoubleTree by Hilton)

This is the closest thing Hilo has to a full-service resort, directly on Hilo Bay on the Waiākea Peninsula. Its three towers are named for the island’s volcanoes, Mauna Kea, Mauna Loa, and Kīlauea, and the property has the only 9-hole golf course in Hilo, the Naniloa. There is an outdoor pool, and the poolside restaurant, Hula Hulas, has live music and hula. Liliʻuokalani Gardens is a short walk away.

Hilo Hawaiian Hotel

Next door to the Naniloa, the Hilo Hawaiian is the quieter, more classic bayfront option, and the last hotel before Liliʻuokalani Gardens. Its 286 rooms face Hilo Bay and Coconut Island (Mokuola), with Mauna Kea beyond, and most have a private lanai. There’s a freshwater pool with a sun deck. Two places to eat on site: the Bull Shed Restaurant and the Waiʻoli Lounge. Castle Resorts manages it, now marketed under Wyndham’s Trademark Collection.

The Inn at Kulaniapia Falls

This Asian-style inn sits a few miles outside Hilo on the slopes of Mauna Kea. The inn has the Kulaniapia waterfalls on its own property, and includes them in on-site activities such as a rappel down the falls (video).

The property also has off-grid cabins, each with a fully screened sleeping area and a wrap-around lanai that looks out on the sunrise over Hilo Bay. They have no private bathrooms and no electricity, so the stay is more communal than the Inn, somewhere between glamping and an off-grid hostel.

SCP Hilo Hotel

Formerly the Seaside Hilo Hotel, this is a mid-range Hilo hotel with basic amenities.

Arnott’s Lodge & Hiking Adventures

Sympathetic lodging with a range of accommodations from private bath, air-conditioned “en-suites” to backpacker dorms and tent spaces. They also organize activities and have negotiated guest discounts on specialized tours.

Hilo Town Inn

Formerly the Pakalana Inn, this small central inn sits a block from the Hilo Farmers Market, within walking distance of downtown restaurants. The 1942 building reopened in 2025 under new family management, with five rooms, some with a kitchen, plus free parking and WiFi.
