Big Island Ziplining: Compare All 4 Zipline Tours

By Gerrit van der Plas | updated August 4, 2026 (What changed?)

Big Island ziplining costs $155 to $249 per adult, and the cheapest of the four is also the newest. Kohala Zipline in Hāwī rebuilt its course in 2026 and charges $155 for 5 lines and 2 sky bridges. The other three sit near Hilo on the Hāmākua Coast and run $227 to $249, with Umauma Falls the longest at nine lines.

Weight limits are the first thing to check. Kohala weighs every rider at check-in and takes 70 to 270 lbs, ages 8 and up, while Botanical World and Umauma go down to 35 lbs and age 4. Kohala’s canopy tour has no hotel pickup, and the drive from Kailua-Kona runs about an hour.

Kohala Zipline runs out of Hāwī at the north end of the island. The other three sit on the Hāmākua Coast north of Hilo, and any of the four works as a day trip from the other side.

Map of all ziplines, and how they compare

The four courses run 5 to 9 lines. Umauma and Botanical World each cross a suspension bridge. Kohala crosses two sky bridges and puts you on a tree-mounted spiral staircase you climb yourself. Kohala and Umauma both sell a longer combination tour that adds a waterfall swim.

How we assigned “Best for”

  • Kohala Zipline is the cheapest of the four at $155 and the only tree-to-tree canopy tour on the island.
  • Umauma is the pick for families: four of its nine lines are dual lines, so a parent and child cross side by side, and it takes riders from age 4.
  • Hawaii Zipline Tours is the gentlest of the four if you’re nervous about heights, since the lines start short and build in length and height.
  • Botanical World Adventures is the cheapest of the three Hilo-side courses at $227, and its last line ends with a view over 250-foot Kamaʻeʻe Falls.

Zipline tours near Kona (North Kohala)

Kohala Zipline is the only operator on this side of the island. It was founded in 2011 by the team behind Hawaii Forest & Trail.

Kohala Zipline canopy tours

Kohala Zipline tore out its old course and rebuilt it. What runs now is 5 lines and 2 sky bridges, tree to tree inside a private nature reserve, with self-braking on every line so you set your own speed. Top speeds reach 45 mph.

One line lands you on a cliffside platform, and the sky bridge you cross next runs alongside a waterfall. A spiral staircase on the route is the only tree-mounted one in Hawaiʻi. This is Phase 1 of the rebuild. Phase 2 arrives in fall 2026 and adds a rappel.

The base is in Hāwī, about 40 minutes past the Waikoloa resorts and an hour from Kailua-Kona. A four-wheel-drive van takes you from there up an old sugarcane access road to the course, about 10 to 15 minutes with some light off-road sections. Only the Zip and Dip includes transport, from five set pickup points in Kona and the Kohala Coast resorts. The canopy tour has no pickup, so you meet at the base.

Every guest is weighed at check-in, and there is no refund for anyone outside the weight limit. Groups cap at nine guests with two guides.

The two tours here are the 2-hour Kohala Canopy Adventure and the full-day “Zip and Dip“, which adds lunch and a swim under a private waterfall. The guided walk in between is about a mile over 1.5 to 2 hours on uneven ground, so the combo runs 8 to 9 hours door to door.

Zipline tours near Hilo (Hāmākua Coast)

The three Hilo-side courses sit within a few miles of each other, all off Old Māmalahoa Highway.

Note: KapohoKine Adventures, which used to sell a zipline near Hilo, no longer offers one. The company still runs volcano and stargazing tours out of Hilo.

Umauma Falls zipline experience

The draw here is a private view of the triple-tiered Umauma Falls that no public trail reaches, 16 miles north of Hilo. Nine lines cover more than two miles of cable over 1.5 to 3 hours, and four of them are dual lines, so two riders cross side by side.

The gardens on the property are included in the ticket. You pass 14 waterfalls along the route, and a 200-foot suspension bridge carries you 100 feet above a water-filled lava tube to reach line 5. That line runs parallel to the main falls.

Good to know: Umauma sells the same nine lines combined with a waterfall swim.

Hawaii Zipline Tours

Hawaii Zipline Tours, formerly Skyline Eco Adventures, runs seven lines in Honomū, a few minutes from ʻAkaka Falls State Park. The lines start short and build in length and height. The full tour runs about 2.5 hours, and you check in on Old Māmalahoa Highway.

Two lines stand out. One crosses in front of the 250-foot Kolekole waterfall, and another spans a 450-foot ravine.

Botanical World Adventures zipline

The last of eight lines ends with a view over Kamaʻeʻe Falls, a 250-foot waterfall no road reaches. The course sits in Botanical World’s gardens near Hilo, a few minutes from town, where a hedge maze and on-property waterfalls give the non-zipping half of a group something to do.

The first lines are short and close to the ground, and the course opens up from there. The tour runs 2 to 2.5 hours. Riders from 35 lbs and children from age 4 can take part, with a certified guide riding tandem with anyone under 70 lbs.

Zipline Botanical World Adventures

What happens during a zipline tour?

Most Big Island zipline tours last 2 to 3 hours and run 5 to 9 lines, connected by short trail walks between platforms. You fly 30 to 200 feet above the ground depending on the line.

Every tour starts with a safety briefing and harness fitting. Guides are certified and clip you in at every transition point. No prior experience is needed.

Weight limits, and what else to check before you book

Age and weight limits: Kohala Zipline is the strictest at 70 to 270 lbs, ages 8 and up. Hawaii Zipline Tours runs 40 to 260 lbs, the lowest ceiling of the four. Umauma and Botanical World both start at 35 lbs and take children from age 4.

What to wear: Closed-toe shoes are required at every operator. Most ask for long pants or knee-length shorts and a shirt with sleeves, since no bare skin may sit against the harness. Leave tank tops and anything loose at the hotel.

Weather: All four run in light rain, which is normal on the Hāmākua Coast, and operators hand out ponchos or rain jackets. Heavy rain, lightning or high wind can cancel a tour.

Cancellation: Kohala Zipline and Hawaii Zipline Tours give a full refund with 24 hours’ notice. Umauma requires 48, and Botanical World lists 24 to 48. Inside that window, and for no-shows, you’re charged in full.

Booking: Book online in advance, especially December through March and June through August. Groups are small, capped at nine guests at Kohala. Walk-ins are sometimes possible but never guaranteed.
