No. Hawaiʻi state rules ban horseback riding on beaches on state land (HAR §13-221-11), and state parks allow horses only in designated areas, so as of September 2026 no Maui operator offers beach rides. Choosing a horseback ride on Maui
Check the drive first: the operators are spread from Nāpili to Haʻikū, and a ranch on the far side of the island can be more than an hour’s drive each way. Check each ranch’s weight limit, cancellation rules and age minimum before you book.
Weight limits and weigh-ins
Maui Mountain Activities has riders step on a scale at check-in with their gear on, so allow a few pounds for boots, jeans and the saddlebag. It may move a rider to a different horse if the scale reads more than 15 lb over the weight given at booking. Circle M guides may check weight at check-in too. Triple L weighs everyone, and it may turn away riders with a BMI over 28 because a horse should carry no more than 20% of its own body weight.
Cancellation policies
Triple L bookings are non-refundable. If you cancel, you lose what you paid, though you can move to an open date for a 25% rebooking fee or give the ride to someone else.
Circle M and Maui Mountain Activities refund with 24 hours’ notice for up to five riders and 48 hours for larger groups; Circle M’s private rides need 72 hours, as do Maui Mountain Activities groups of 12 or more. Ironwood asks for 24 hours for groups of three or fewer and 48 hours for five or more, so a group of four should call to confirm. Circle M, Maui Mountain Activities, Ironwood and Triple L refund or credit a ride they cancel for weather or unsafe conditions.
Age minimums
Minimum ages run from 7 at Circle M and Maui Mountain Activities to 9 at Ironwood, which also requires horse riders to be at least 4 feet tall. Circle M riders must mount and dismount on their own, and at Maui Mountain Activities and Ironwood a child needs an adult on the same ride.
What a “2-hour” ride means
The time on the booking page usually covers check-in, a safety briefing and mounting as well as the ride. Circle M’s 9 to 11 am slot starts with check-in at 8:45, and several of its riders in 2025 and 2026 said they spent closer to an hour in the saddle. Maui Mountain Activities checks in at 8:15 and finishes around 11:30. Ironwood counts mounting and dismounting in its ride times, so on its shorter ride you spend less of the booked time on the trail.
What to expect on a Maui trail ride
Every ride here is guided, and most go out single file at a walk, nose to tail. Guides ask about your riding experience and match you to a horse by size and skill, and at several ranches they stop along the trail to take photos on your phone. Wear long pants and closed-toe shoes, which most of the ranches require.
The trails are dusty and windy on dry days and muddy after rain. Triple L rides go out rain or shine unless conditions turn unsafe, and the other ranches may cancel for weather. Bring sunscreen and sunglasses, and a light jacket for the rides on Haleakalā’s slopes.

The six operators are spread around the island, from the northwest coast at Waiheʻe through West Maui and Haleakalā’s slopes to Haʻikū on the North Shore. Circle M and Maui Mountain Activities sit less than a mile apart on Kahekili Highway.
Circle M Ranch

Circle M took over the old Mendes Ranch on Kahekili Highway near Waiheʻe in 2022, and its trail runs above the sea cliffs of Maui’s northwest coast. Guides stop at an overlook midway through the ride to talk about the ranch and paniolo history. Reviewers who came with children and no riding experience say the guides put them at ease.
The ride is a single-file walk, and groups can be large: one 2024 reviewer counted 16 horses in line. Riders who want to canter should look at Maui Mountain Activities, less than a mile down the road. Circle M is rated 4.7 on TripAdvisor across 769 reviews as of September 2026, a count that includes its Mendes Ranch years.

Maui Mountain Activities shuttles riders from its ranch on Kahekili Highway near Waiheʻe to the horses, and riders climb single file to about 2,500 feet in the West Maui Mountains before heading back down toward the coast. Guides usually offer an optional short canter or gallop near the end, weather permitting, though not on every ride.
Most of the morning is a slow walk, and the climb is steep, easier for riders with some time in the saddle than for nervous first-timers. Whether you see waterfalls along the route depends on weather and season, and several riders in 2025 and 2026 saw none. The ride ends with ocean views but doesn’t reach the beach. Ironwood Ranch is the only horseback operator in West Maui, 1.5 miles up a gravel road above Nāpili and 20 minutes or more from the Kāʻanapali resorts by the operator’s estimate. The trail crosses old pineapple plantation fields and ironwood and eucalyptus forest to a high point with the ocean below and Molokaʻi and Lānaʻi across the channel.
It’s a walking ride, nose to tail, so experienced riders who want to trot should book elsewhere. The trail gets muddy after rain. Group rides leave daily at 8 and 10 am, and private rides at 1:30 pm.
The hand-led pony ride for ages 4 to 10 lasts 30 minutes and runs Tuesdays and Thursdays at 11:30 am, for $60 per child.

The only horseback ride in West Maui, on old pineapple plantation land in the foothills above Nāpili. Kids ride horses from age 9, and children from age 4 can take a hand-led pony ride.

Best for: a working-ranch ride with paniolo history, and the only Maui ride with lunch built in.
The De Ponte family has raised Angus cattle on Triple L Ranch, on Haleakalā‘s southwest slope past ʻUlupalakua, since 1947. Rides cross the working pastures in groups of six or fewer while the guides tell the ranch’s paniolo history, and riders may trot on even ground. The weekday ride runs Monday to Friday and stops at lookouts over the last lava flow on Maui.
The Saturday lunch ride is the longest on Maui at 3.5 hours and $300, with burgers from the ranch’s own beef served at a lookout over Kahoʻolawe and Molokini. Bookings are non-refundable, and the ranch advises travel insurance. The ranch puts the drive at about an hour to an hour and 15 minutes from Wailea.

Best for: a private ride with a ranch family on Haleakalā’s Upcountry slopes.
Thompson Ranch is a family cattle ranch in Kula, and its rides are private: the family takes out your party only, through eucalyptus forest and pasture with the West Maui Mountains and the neighbor islands in view. Past riders describe steep, rocky, dusty trails, and it’s cooler up in Kula, so bring a layer.
Call ahead to confirm the ranch is running rides before you plan around it: its most recent TripAdvisor review is from January 2024. It books by phone, at (808) 878-1910, so ask for the current price, age minimum and weight limit when you call.

Happy Trail Rides
Best for: children under 65 lb, as a short hand-led outing on the Road to Hāna.
Happy Trail Rides is a small family farm on the Hāna Highway in Haʻikū, near the start of the Road to Hāna. A guide leads each child on a miniature horse for a 35-minute private ride on the farm’s trail, with views of the ocean and the highway. Adults don’t ride.
Rides and prices: $75 per child, for children under 65 lb only. By appointment, 10 am to 4 pm daily, weather permitting; payment by Venmo or cash. Helmets are provided and closed-toe shoes are required.

Paniolo history on Maui without a trail ride
Hawaiian ranching dates to the 1830s, when vaqueros from California came to the islands to teach Hawaiians to rope and ride. You can see what’s left of that culture on Maui for little or no money:
- Makawao, the Upcountry town built around ranching, is free to walk, with a downtown of galleries and shops styled on its paniolo past.
- Kaonoulu Ranch runs rodeos at the Oskie Rice Event Center in Makawao, including the Fourth of July Makawao Stampede; dates and tickets are on the Maui Rodeo website. Our Maui events calendar lists the Stampede and the fall Oskie Rice Memorial Rodeo by month.
