About this show
On Monday and Wednesday evenings, the only fire show on Kauaʻi’s North Shore runs under the roof of Porter Pavilion at Anaina Hou Community Park in Kīlauea. Every lūʻau on the island is in Kapaʻa and Wailua, Līhuʻe or Poʻipū. You’re booking a buffet dinner and a Polynesian fire show rather than a traditional lūʻau: the kālua pork is smoked instead of cooked in an imu (an underground oven), there’s no imu ceremony, and General Admission guests don’t get a lei.
Happy-hour drinks and music start at 4:00 PM at the Sunset Lanai, inside the park’s mini golf course on the upper campus. Drinks there are for purchase. Gates open at 5:30 PM and the buffet runs until 6:45. At 6:45, show-only guests arrive and a member of the Colburn ʻohana (family) opens with live Hawaiian music and hula, explaining each dance as it goes.
Doors close at 7:30 PM for the fire show, which runs an hour: drumming, the story of how fire was used across Polynesian cultures, and a fire-dancing finale by Coppin Colburn and his family. The performers bring audience members into parts of the show. At 8:30 you can take photos with the cast, about 3 hours after the gates opened.
Anaina Hou bills the buffet as “Don Ho Paniolo Style” (paniolo means Hawaiian cowboy): smoked kālua pork, teriyaki chicken, stir-fry vegetables, white rice, macaroni salad, green salad with lilikoʻi (passion fruit) vinaigrette, sweet Hawaiian rolls and pineapple. The pork is gluten-free, the vegetables are vegan and gluten-free, and seconds are available. Drinks cost extra, the house mai tais too. Front-Row VIP is the only ticket that comes with a drink.
Seating tiers: your ticket is your row
There’s no seat map and no seat picking. Each ticket tier comes with its own row, and a child sits in a reserved row only on a reserved ticket bought for that child.
Front-Row VIP
The reserved front row, a lei (ti leaf or flower, depending on the section) and one drink.
Second-Row VIP
The reserved second row and a lei, without the drink.
Third-Row Reserved
The reserved third row, without a lei. If you want a reserved row and don’t care about the lei, we’d book this one.
General Admission
At $129 a head, General Admission gets you the buffet and the show, with first-come seating in the GA section from 5:30 PM. You can leave a jacket or umbrella on a chair to hold it while you’re at the buffet. Several reviewers found plenty of decent GA seats and were glad they skipped the VIP price. Kids 3 to 12 book a GA child ticket, and under-3s sit free on a lap. A group of five can book the Family Pack, a General Admission table for five.
Show-only tickets aren’t sold online: call the box office at (808) 977-7726 for the waitlist, and know that a waitlist spot isn’t a confirmed seat. Show-only guests arrive at 6:45 PM and take the seats that are left.
North Shore stays: a fire show without the drive to Kapaʻa
If you’re staying in Princeville or elsewhere on the North Shore, this is the only lūʻau-style show you can reach without a drive down the east side. It’s a smaller, more relaxed show than the resort lūʻau, performed by one family. The food is solid and plentiful, if not special. Some reviewers were back for a repeat visit.
A few reviews from 2019 to 2021 call the show short and unpolished. GA seats go first-come, so for a closer seat, be at the gate when it opens at 5:30 PM.
Parking, rain and the walk down to the pavilion
Parking is on site at 5-2723 Kūhiō Highway, and we’d allow a few extra minutes to work out where to leave the car inside the park. The pavilion is at the bottom of the hill, past the playground. You wait in the open outside the check-in gate, so we’d bring a rain jacket even though the show itself runs rain or shine under a roof. If you’re running late, call (808) 977-7726: the gates close promptly at 7:30 PM.
There’s no pickup; the booking form lets you flag interest in a shuttle. Kamaʻāina (Hawaiʻi resident) and military rates are sold at the box office with valid ID. Cancel more than 24 hours out for a refund, less a 15% processing fee, so book once your Monday or Wednesday is fixed.
About Anaina Hou Community Park
Anaina Hou Community Park is a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit on 30 acres in Kīlauea. Besides Porter Pavilion, where this show runs, the campus has a mini golf course and gardens, a 17,000 sq ft playground, weekly farmers’ markets, the Wai Koa Loop trail, youth programs, a Kauaʻi Bus park-and-ride and a recycling and resilience center.
Donors, sponsors and volunteers keep the park financially self-sustaining, and its mission statement centers on mālama (caring for) the land and sea, ourselves and each other. Coppin Colburn and his ʻohana (family) perform the fire show.
