The swimming stop at the end of this hike is Kawainui Falls, a private waterfall not reachable by any public trail. Kolekole Falls, at 250 feet, is a viewing stop along the way. Knowing the difference matters before you book.
Private land, three waterfalls, one swim
The route covers 3 miles of private property near Honomu on the Hamakua Coast: first through working pineapple and apple banana fields, then into deep-shade jungle. The shift from cultivated to wild happens quickly, and the trail surface reflects it. Packed dirt paths between crop rows give way to rooted, uneven ground as the jungle closes in. Closed-toe shoes are not optional here. The farm section is exposed to sun; the jungle sections are fully shaded.
Guides carry dry packs and rain jackets available to borrow. Rain comes fast on the Hamakua Coast and clears just as fast, so the right move is to borrow the jacket at the start regardless of what the morning looks like.
What the guides actually cover
Every guide completes an 80-hour onsite and classroom training program followed by a three-week senior mentorship. All are certified in CPR, AED, First Aid, and lifeguarding. At a private waterfall swim stop with no outside services nearby, that depth of preparation matters. The plant identification and cultural history commentary runs the length of the trail, not just at the waterfall stops. Guides will call out what is growing in the farm sections too, not only once the jungle starts. The native plant commentary is what most reviewers mention alongside the waterfalls themselves, which is not the default for a hike-and-swim tour.
Logistics: who it suits, what to bring
Families with younger children have done this without issue. The trail is not groomed, so the question is footing tolerance, not fitness level. Three miles over 2.5 hours is a relaxed pace with stops at each waterfall.
The swim at Kawainui Falls is in a natural pool at the base of the falls. You can walk directly into it. Wear your swimsuit under your clothes and bring a towel. There are no changing facilities at the falls.
Start times are 9:30am and 1:30pm. The meeting point is 28-1692 Old Mamalahoa Highway, Honomu. No food or beverages are included and there are no snack stops on the route. Eat before you arrive. Cruise ship guests departing from Hilo can arrange pickup and dropoff directly with the operator.
Adult pricing is $172. Children 12 and under are $150. Cancellations made at least 24 hours before departure receive a full refund.
The pineapple fields early in the hike make a better first impression than most guests expect. Most of the reviews that go into specific detail mention the plant commentary alongside the falls, which makes the walk feel like more than a transfer between swim stops.
# About Zipline Tours Hawaii
Zipline Tours Hawaii has operated on 300 acres of private land near Honomu on the Hamakua Coast for over a decade, and we list them because their guide preparation goes beyond what most adventure tour operators require. Every guide completes an 80-hour onsite and classroom training program, a three-week senior mentorship, and full certification in CPR, AED, First Aid, and lifeguarding before leading a tour. For a swim stop at a private waterfall with no outside emergency services on site, that is the right baseline.
