You ride a van from the visitor center to a private section of the Umauma River and swim beneath a waterfall, away from the public Umauma Falls overlook.
Check-in, van transfer and time at the river
You check in at the Umauma Visitor Center 45 minutes before your start time, then ride a short van transfer to the river site. You get about 1 hour at the river: swim, take out a kayak, try a stand-up paddleboard, do the small cliff jump, or sit on the bank and do nothing at all. A catered lunch is included. The operator provides the kayaks, paddleboards and other water gear.
The word private refers to the site, not your group. This is private river access on the operator’s own land, so you are not swimming with the general public, but you may share the spot with one other small group.
Pace, cliff jump and water temperature
The operator sells it as recovery time, and the pace is slow. The cliff jump is small and gentle, low enough for a 74-year-old guest to do alongside swimming and paddling. The water runs cool rather than cold.
Who it actually suits
We slot this into a Big Island itinerary as the easy stop between harder ones, the gentle add-on after a long summit drive or a full hike. Families can bring kids as young as 4, and the price is $92.50 adult and $82.50 youth. Couples who want a picnic lunch and a swim can book it too.
