You ride up the mountainside through a large coconut orchard and banana groves, past fishponds stocked with Hāmākua sunfish, alongside the historic Hāmākua ditch, through tunnels of guava and ironwood, and out to a spring-fed reservoir where the horses sometimes wade in. The trail ends at ocean views over the sea cliffs. On a clear day you can pick out the north cliffs of Waipiʻo, with Maui floating across the channel. Somewhere along the way, the guides hand out fresh fruit picked from the family farm: mango, avocado, and varieties you likely have not tasted before.

Important: this ride does not go into Waipiʻo Valley. Waipiʻo Valley is closed, and this is a ranch high above and beside it, mountain to ocean. You will not reach the valley floor, the black sand beach, or Hiʻilawe waterfall on this ride. The ride is the working ranch itself: 500-plus acres, open range, and the long ocean view down the coast.

What to expect in the saddle

Plan for about 2 hours, roughly two to two and a half hours on a slow day. It is a walking ride the whole way, so it suits children from age 7 and complete beginners, though even at a walk a first-timer’s seat and feet can start to feel it past the halfway mark. The rider weight limit is 200 pounds.

Rides leave Monday through Saturday at 9:30 a.m., 1:30 p.m., and 4:40 p.m., with check-in 30 minutes before departure. The morning ride runs in cooler air with the sun still climbing the coast. The afternoon rides trades that for warmer light over the water near the turnaround. Both cover the same ranch.

The ranch sits at mile marker 7.5 off Highway 240 on the Honokaʻa side, about an hour’s drive from the Kona-side hotels and closer to 90 minutes from Hilo. There is no hotel pickup, so build the drive into your day. Closed-toe shoes and long pants make the saddle and the brush a lot more comfortable, and the morning departure is the one to book if you want the clearest shot at seeing Maui before the clouds build over the channel.
