Feast & Fire is a story-based luau held on the waterfront at the Outrigger Kona Resort & Spa, above Keauhou Bay on the Kona coast. The evening runs 2.5 hours and follows a narrative about Polynesian migration to Hawaiʻi, which gives it more structure than the variety-show format at most Big Island luaus.
The Artisan Village
Check-in opens at 5pm; the Artisan Village opens at 5:30pm and runs for 45 minutes before dinner service begins. The activities are hands-on: lei making, poi pounding, hula lessons with storytelling, and ʻOhe Kapala, a traditional Hawaiian printing method using carved bamboo stamps. There are local craft vendors in the space as well. The pū (conch shell) is blown to open the main show, which gives the transition from pre-show to performance a clear moment rather than a soft fade.
The Show and Dinner
Dinner service and the welcome begin at 6:15pm. The format is a buffet: slow-cooked Kalua pork, island fresh catch, chicken long rice, a poke bar, taro rolls with Hawaiian aleʻa sea salt, and local desserts including malasadas. The open bar runs throughout the evening — cocktails, wine, beer, and signature Mai Tais. Bar service is self-serve. The main show starts at 6:45pm, performed by Traditions Hawaiʻi, whose cast of dancers, musicians, and performers traces the story of the Polynesians who first landed in Hawaiʻi through hula, drumming, live theater, and music. Fire dancing closes the show. On outdoor nights, the fire sequence with Keauhou Bay behind it reads differently than it does in photos.
Before You Book
One detail to know before you choose this luau for its oceanfront location: the show does not always run outside. When weather conditions prompt it the venue moves to an indoor ballroom. If the waterfront setting is part of why you’re choosing Feast & Fire over other options, call the resort on the day of your booking to confirm the show is running outdoors. Parking for non-hotel guests can be confusing; signage is not well marked, and self-parking costs $10 per vehicle. Plan for 20 extra minutes if you’re driving in.
The Traditions Hawaiʻi cast gets consistent praise in the review record, and performance quality is the most frequently cited strength from guests who have done other Big Island luaus. The main variable is the venue. Outdoor shows at $185 for general seating are a solid value for the package. Indoor shows at the same price land differently, and the reviews where guests feel they overpaid almost always involve a ballroom night.
