Saddle up for a scenic 2.5-hour ride through the rolling green hills of Hakalau, crossing open pastures with ocean and mountain views before reaching a private waterfall where you can swim, paddleboard, and enjoy a picnic.
The tour begins at the Wailea Horseback barn next to Umauma Falls Zipline. After a short riding orientation, you’ll set out on calm, trail-trained horses that suit both beginners and experienced riders. Your local guides — whose family has been running horseback tours for more than 30 years — will share stories of paniolo (Hawaiian cowboy) culture and point out native plants and historic plantation sites along the way.
Swim and picnic at a private waterfall
After about an hour on horseback, you’ll arrive at a secluded waterfall fed by the Maunakea watershed. The 45-minute stop gives you time to cool off in the fresh water, relax with a snack, or try paddleboarding at the base of the falls. It’s one of the only horseback rides on the island where you can actually swim — a rare and memorable Big Island experience.
