Four of the nine ziplines here run tandem, meaning you go side-by-side with another guest rather than solo. Umauma eXperience builds tandem runs into the full course, not just on select lines: tandem ziplining at 65 mph over a tiered waterfall is a different experience than standing alone at a launch platform.
Reviewers who came in anxious about heights credit the guides specifically for working through positioning, body mechanics, and what to expect on each line before anyone clips in. That level of briefing is not standard across zipline operations on the island. One guide sings in English and Hawaiian between stations. Whether you find it charming or slightly unexpected probably depends on where you’re standing. The guides use walkie-talkies to coordinate between platforms, which you’ll hear between runs.
The course covers 2 miles of zipping across nine lines, with a 2,000-foot line running directly over the Umauma River and the falls below. Views from the lines include 14 waterfalls, the Pacific Ocean, and Mauna Kea on clear days. A 200-foot suspension bridge crosses 100 feet above a water-filled lava tube and fern grotto. Triple-tier Umauma Falls is visible from a guest-only shelter. After the lines, the group moves to a private section of the Umauma River where the main pool reaches 70 feet deep. Kayaks and stand-up paddleboards are available there. The hour in the pool is included in the 3.5 - 4 hours experience.
Lunch arrives by zipline
The catered lunch is served at a private pavilion and delivered via utility zip-line from the kitchen. Sit-down, not a box lunch at a picnic table. Reviewers who expected a snack break flagged the lunch as a highlight. All safety equipment is included: helmets, harnesses, and rain-wear. The tour runs rain or shine, and the rain-wear holds up through a full rainstorm, which has happened and earned the operation a five-star review despite it.
Upside-down positions are allowed and common on the course; guides brief guests on approved techniques before departure.
What to know before you book
Guests must be at least 4 years old and weigh between 35 and 275 pounds. The physical requirement is modest: three flights of stairs and short walks between stations. The tour is not suitable for pregnant guests or those with serious medical conditions or prior back or neck injuries. Tours start at 10am; check-in is at 9:15am. There is no hotel pickup; you drive to the departure point in Hakalau on the Hāmākua Coast. Cancellation requires 48 hours notice; cancellations inside that window are charged in full.
Adult tickets are $341.50. Youth tickets for ages 4 to 10 are $321.

# About Umauma eXperience
Umauma eXperience operates on private land on the Hāmākua Coast, giving them access to viewpoints and river areas not open to the public. We list them because the course design is varied in a way most zipline operations aren’t: tandem lines, solo lines, a suspension bridge, and a river component in a single tour. Reviewer feedback across more than 140 TripAdvisor ratings is consistent on guide quality and safety communication, which matters more to us than the hardware.
