A private 5.5-mile ATV course on the Hamakua coast, with ocean views over the Pacific, a section through a guava grove, and a swim at Umauma’s private waterfall to close. The tour is scheduled for 90 minutes, with check-in 45 minutes before your departure slot.
Guides run a short practice loop before the main course, which takes most first-timers about five minutes and is enough to get comfortable on the controls. After that, the trail follows the contours of the Hamakua coast property: elevation changes, irregular terrain, and consistent Pacific Ocean views to the north, with a guava grove section midway through. The Hamakua coast gets heavy, consistent rainfall, and the trail absorbs most of it. Mud is not incidental here; most guests come back thoroughly coated. Bring clothes you can sacrifice and a dedicated change of shoes.

At the Waterfall
Near the end of the trail, the route pauses at Umauma’s private waterfall pond for about 20 minutes. There is a light local snack, room to swim, and a platform above the pool for jumping in. The drop is about 10 feet; guides walk guests through the technique if needed. One detail worth knowing before you arrive: red ants have been reported in the waterfall swimming area. The guides carry alcohol wipes for this, but it is worth knowing in advance, particularly if you are bringing young children.

The Side x Side UTVs, available in 2-seat and 4-seat configurations, make this a practical option for mixed groups where some members want the full course without driving. ATV drivers must be 16 and over with parental permission and a valid driver’s license. Side x Side drivers must be 18 and over. Passengers aged 4 to 11 must ride in the SxS with a parent or guardian.
Before You Book
No prior ATV experience is required. Riders must wear closed-toe shoes, pants, and a shirt. Maximum driver weight is 350 lbs; maximum back-seat passenger weight is 250 lbs; minimum participant weight is 35 lbs. Not suitable for guests with a history of neck or back injury or for those who are pregnant.
The tour closes with a group lap at The Pit, a riding mound near the facility, before returning to base. Guides Mateo, Jake, Caden, and Suzie come up by name in recent reviews at a rate that suggests consistent staffing, which matters on a trail that changes week to week depending on how much rain the Hamakua coast has had.
Umauma eXperience operates from private land in Hakalau, on the Hamakua coast, running guided ATV, zipline, kayak, and horseback tours across the same property. They hold the Pono Pledge, Hawaii’s responsible tourism commitment. Guides are named consistently in guest reviews across hundreds of visits, a reasonable indicator for an outdoor operation where trail conditions and guide quality vary with the weather.
