Kahaluʻu Bay generates consistent, manageable waves almost year-round. It is one of the more sheltered breaks on the Kona coast, which is precisely why surf schools set up here rather than at the more exposed beaches to the north. The wave face is small and forgiving, and the beach is directly across Aliʻi Drive from the surf shop.

What guests mention first, consistently, is not the beach. It is the instructors. Kahaluʻu Bay Surf and Sea puts certified instructors in the water with you for the full 2 hours. Not watching from shore, but right there, reading the sets and pushing you into waves at the right moment. That physical timing assist is what most first-timers credit for their first successful ride. The review record spans adults in their late 50s learning for the first time, families with children as young as 8, and guests who came in describing themselves as nervous around water. Most of them stood up.

Lessons start at the shop on Aliʻi Drive with an on-land briefing: wipeout technique, surfing etiquette, and the pop-up movement practiced on the ground until it is automatic. From there you move across the street and into the water. Soft-top longboards, rash guards, and reef booties are all included. Showers and storage are available at the shop. One planning detail: the nearest parking lot runs about $12 for four hours.

If you have any flexibility on start time, book a morning session. Wave conditions tend to be cleaner earlier in the day, and the bay is less crowded. By midday, when multiple beginner groups are in the water simultaneously, it gets noticeably busier. There are no food vendors directly adjacent to the beach, so bring something if you are making a full morning of it. Kahaluʻu Bay is a designated marine life conservation district, which means reef-safe sunscreen is required, not just recommended.

Kahaluʻu Bay Surf and Sea has held a 4.9 rating across more than 2,200 verified reviews for a reason that is worth stating plainly: the instructors are in the water with you, not just running a safety briefing on the beach. That distinction matters more for first-timers than any other feature of the lesson.

Private, semi-private, or group lessons. What’s the difference?

Lesson formats: group (up to 8 students per instructor, $139/person), semi-private (two to three students, $169/person), and private (one-on-one, $225/person). The semi-private option is the one that disappears first for couples and small groups as the ratio is close enough to private instruction that it functions similarly, at a lower price.

Private Surf Lessons (One on One Instruction)

Private surf lessons are the best way to learn how to surf! With one on one attention, you get to learn at your own pace. Throughout the entire surf lesson, your instructor is right by your side, giving you helpful tips to increase your surfing ability. A great option for small children, non-swimmers or advanced surfers.

semi-private surf lessons (Two to Three People)

Semi-Private surf lessons are perfect for couples, friends and children. With a such a low student to instructor ratio, you get the same personalized attention that you receive with a private lesson. Learning to surf is always a blast when you have someone to share the experience with, so grab a friend and get ready to get wet!

Group lessons (Group of max. 8 Surfers)

Learn to surf and make new friends with a Group Surf Lesson. With the low student to instructor ratio, you are guaranteed to catch tons of waves and have a blast surfing with others.

About Kahaluu Bay Surf and Sea

Kahaluʻu Bay Surf and Sea has operated from this location for over 25 years. All instructors hold CPR, First Aid, and Lifeguard certifications, with annual recertification required. The school has earned TripAdvisor’s Certificate of Excellence for six consecutive years. We list them because the combination of instructor credentials, location, and a 4.9 rating across more than 2,200 reviews is consistent enough to recommend without qualification.
