Road to Hāna, Hawaiian Style

The Road to Hāna is 64 miles of two-lane highway with more than 600 curves and 59 bridges. You cannot both drive it and see it because the road demands too much attention for that. The drive heads east along the Hāna Highway with stops at Kaumahina State Wayside Park for a coastal overlook, a stretch of rainbow eucalyptus trees, Wailua Valley Lookout, Waikani Falls (also called Three Bears, typically visible from the road), and Waiʻānapanapa State Park for a 90-minute stop at the black sand beach. Park admission is included: the timed-entry reservation is handled by the operator, which saves you from managing that system yourself. Lunch at the park is a deli sub sandwich, water, and chips.

After Waiʻānapanapa, the tour continues to Hāna Town, with a stop at Puaʻa Kaʻa State Park for an optional waterfall swim on the return (cold water, weather permitting), and a final stop at Aunty Sandy’s Banana Bread. When the timing works, the bread comes out hot from the oven. That is not guaranteed, but when it lands it is the detail guests mention most.

A few practical notes before booking: the van entry is high and a step stool is provided — factor that in if you have knee or hip concerns. The 600-plus curves are real; motion sickness is worth thinking about if winding roads affect you. Breakfast is not included in the tour price, though an early no-host coffee shop stop is made.
