About this lūʻau

Kālua pig, huli huli chicken, teriyaki beef and mahi mahi lūʻau (fish baked with taro leaf) are the mains on the buffet at Lūʻau Ka Hikina, the Sheraton Kauai Coconut Beach Resort’s own lūʻau in Kapaʻa. We read more than 300 of its TripAdvisor reviews in September 2026, and food drew more praise than any other part of the night. We counted 80 phrases praising the food against 10 complaints, the best ratio of any lūʻau on Kauaʻi.

Why book it: the best-reviewed buffet of any Kauaʻi lūʻau

On the resort’s menu as of September 27, 2026 (the resort notes it can change), the buffet also has Kailani Farms greens, lomi lomi salmon (salted salmon with tomato and onion), mac salad, marinated cucumber, taro rolls, Hawaiian sweet rolls and Hanalei poi (pounded taro). Lemongrass and kaffir-scented Calrose rice, Molokaʻi sweet potatoes, roasted vegetables and a vegetarian curry go with the mains. Dessert is haupia (coconut pudding) tartlets, pineapple upside-down cake, coconut cake and cut fruit, with coffee and tea.

Staff call tables up to the buffet one at a time. Reviewers name the kālua pork and the chicken among their favorites. Go back for seconds soon after your table’s first trip: one 2023 reviewer saw staff clear the buffet about 30 minutes in. A June 2026 review mentions gluten-free and dairy-free labels on the dishes.

The pavilion, check-in, dinner and the show

The lūʻau is held in Hālau Hoʻokipa, an open-air pavilion with a thatched roof on the lawn beside the Sheraton, set back from the beach with the ocean in view. It can get hot and humid under the roof. One August 2026 reviewer found it too hot for a one-year-old. There’s no imu (underground oven) ceremony, where a roasted pig is lifted out of the ground.

Check-in opens at 5:15 PM on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Hosts hand each guest a shell necklace and a mai tai or fruit punch, and seating starts at 5:30 PM. The hosted open bar runs until the performance starts; after that, you pay at the bar. Before dinner, guests can try poi balls (weighted balls on cords), drums and bamboo sticks while local vendors sell flower lei and crafts.

Dinner comes next, then the show. Kumu hula (hula teacher) Leilani Rivera Low directs the hula, including hula kahiko (ancient-style hula). Live music backs Tahitian, Māori, Tongan and Samoan dances too. A host explains what each dance is and where it comes from, with some audience participation. A fire-knife dancer closes the show.

Reviewers praise the food most, along with the host’s narration of each dance. They call the crowd smaller than at other lūʻau they’ve attended; one guest estimated 200 to 300 people. Complaints come from guests who expected a beach setting from the marketing photos or a flower lei, and some report weak or slow drinks. Repeat lūʻau-goers find the price high.

Tickets, table seating and parking

Adults 14 and up pay $193.75 and juniors 7 to 13 pay $130.64. As of September 2026, those prices include tax and fees. Children 3 to 6 pay $88.57, and ages 1 to 2 are free. Hawaiʻi residents pay a kamaʻāina rate about 10% lower.

There’s one ticket type, general seating, and the evening runs 2.5 to 3 hours. Cancellations within 48 hours of the lūʻau date get no refund.

You can’t pick a seat when you book. Hosts seat guests at long shared tables in arrival order, and late arrivals get the back tables, where some seats face away from the stage and the fire-knife dancer is hard to see. For a table facing the stage, be in line when check-in opens at 5:15 PM. Reviews from 2023 describe a wait in the sun before seating, so bring a hat.

Park in the resort’s own lot at 650 Aleka Loop, a short walk from the pavilion. Reviewers describe parking there as easy. Put that address in your map app: one guest first drove to a different lūʻau.
